Sample Design
The sample frame is critical to the success of
every project. First of all, the sample frame must be
representative of the population. Secondly, the sample frame needs
to be developed in a manner consistent with sample techniques, such as
generating replicate sample frames so the field can exhaust one
replicate at a time; this method ensures proper representation.
Thirdly, the sample frame must have adequate information for the desired
data-collection methodology.
The type of sample frame is very important when considering cost and
representation. In markets where there is a large number of
unlisted phone numbers, RDD (random-digit dialing) samples should be used. In projects
where the population can be identified by census data geographically, a
targeted random list sample can be more cost effective and still provide
a good representation of the population.
